“The Recession largely bottomed-out in the Spring, businesses have made most of the adjustments they needed to make, and that should set up the economy to resume growing…”

Resource Development Company, Inc. is primarily geared towards retained search and our mission of helping companies, “Build High Performance Organizations“. Of course, the state of our country has a lot to do with the amount of retained searches we’re currently engaged in. Like most executive search firms, we’re doing our best to survive in this economy, and also add some other services to our repertoire to help differentiate RDC, Inc. from competitors in the industry. With that in mind, the co-owners of RDC, Inc. did some brainstorming several months ago and decided to create a web-based company under the Resource Development Company umbrella. That new company, Jobmetrx, was officially launched on May 12th, 2009.

Looking for a new position can be a full time job in itself. To be successful, you need to have the right tools, the right approach and the right attitude. Jobmetrx helps to “brand” job seekers and bundles four key areas of the employment search process – résumé preparation, personal branding, job search assistance and career counseling. They will help you develop self-marketing materials that will effectively convey your skills, experience and talents, as well as create your own personal brand and craft a comprehensive search strategy.

An article about Jobmetrx was recently featured in the Philadelphia Business Journal – http://philadelphia.bizjournals.com/philadelphia/stories/2009/06/15/smallb1.html.

Thinking back to a recent blog post I made in regards to the importance of utilizing Social Networking in your employment search, I have read a few articles recently that expand upon that topic.

One of which was Matt LeBlanc’s post of Why Should I Be Interested In Your Status Update / Tweet? I’m sure a lot of people have been thinking the same thing…”why should I care…”, well one point that is in direct relation to Job Search would be the following scenario.

You’re scheduled to go on an interview. You want to know more about the company, more than you can find by simply typing the company’s name into a Google search and doing your own due diligence. Where do you go from here? Well, this is the perfect time a Facebook “Status Update” or Twitter “Tweet” can be a very effective tool. For example:

  • Interviewing at ____ on ____ for a ____ opportunity. Any thoughts or ideas on interview best practices for the company/role?
  • Came across a ____ opportunity at ____ and would welcome a warm introduction if one can be made.
  • Searching for information on ____ – any insights and information would be appreciated.

This is not one of those useless updates about what you’re eating for dinner , etc… but rather an effective way to gain information, ideas, or suggestions about the opportunity you’re about to pursue. Good luck with your job search, and keep this in mind the next time you feel like letting the world know what you’re up to.

In Sundays’ NYT Job Section, Jon Picoult wrote an article citing the need for companies to consider how they treat job seekers, especially before any of them might become employees. How a company interacts with job candidates says a lot about them, their brand and their values. The author notes that HR professionals and hiring managers need to treat job candidates like customers. After all, they are in effect, buying a “product”: a new employer, a new position, a promise of career growth opportunity.

While many companies think they have the upper hand with candidates in today’s environment, they need to remember that every economic cycle eventually turns and there is always competition for top talent. Treating people with respect and dignity will only help further a company’s image as an employer of choice. The article mentions Southwest Airlines as a great example of a company that recognizes employment candidates are not only career customers, but that they could also be or become customers of the airline. It is for that reason that Southwest follows its core principles and ensures that no applicant feels inferior or rejected. The results speak for themselves as Southwest consistently gets great people, who in turn produce superior financial performance.

We all know how important networking is in the business world, opening doors that may have otherwise been under lock and key. Today, with the vast number of professionals using sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter it becomes even more important to also utilize these social networking sites while you’re engaged in an employment search.

If you’re not currently a member of any of the sites mentioned above, you have really been missing out. For instance, LinkedIn (mostly geared towards business) has over 40 million professional members who use LinkedIn to exchange information, ideas and opportunities.
